Brief your recommenders. Send them a one-page document that covers: what you built, the core challenge you encountered, what you learned, and why it matters to you. You studied a system. What did it reveal about values and tradeoffs?
Best for: Students who did an AI ethics case study, wrote a research paper, or engaged deeply with the social implications of a real-world AI system.
This essay works when it moves from analysis to personal stake. "I analyzed how this hiring algorithm perpetuates inequality" is a summary. "I analyzed how this algorithm works, and I realized my own community is in the affected zip codes" is an essay. The analysis earns its place because it connects to something real for you.
You hit a hard problem. How did you think through it?
Best for: Students whose best material isn't a finished product but a sustained, rigorous engagement with a difficult technical or conceptual problem — including problems they didn't fully solve.
This is often the most underused frame because students feel embarrassed to write about incomplete work. That's a mistake. The quality of your thinking under difficulty is more revealing than a polished result. Admissions readers know that hard problems don't always resolve cleanly. What they're watching for is whether you can reason clearly about what happened and why.
Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
These are the patterns admissions readers flag most often when reviewing AI-focused applications:
Listing tools instead of impact
"Python, TensorFlow, GPT-4, React, AWS, Docker" is a tech stack, not an accomplishment. Tools are table stakes. What matters is what you did with them, what problem you solved, and what you learned. If you're spending your character count on frameworks, you're spending it on the wrong thing.
Exaggerating scale or impact
Admissions readers have seen a lot of applications. When a student claims their high school project "helped thousands of students" or "achieved state-of-the-art accuracy," they read it with skepticism. Honest, specific, verifiable numbers ("42 students at my school used it over one semester") are more credible — and more impressive — than inflated claims.
Being vague about the hard part
"I faced challenges but overcame them through persistence" is the single most meaningless sentence in college applications. What was the challenge, specifically? What did you try? What failed? What did that teach you? The specificity of your struggle is what makes the story believable.
Writing about AI instead of yourself
The admissions essay question isn't "What is AI?" or "Why does AI matter?" It's "Who are you?" An essay that spends 400 words explaining how language models work before getting to you has the structure backwards. Start with yourself. Use the AI work as evidence.
Relying on AI to write your AI essay
